Activists around the world are starting to talk about repealing mental health laws - specifically, the laws that allow psychiatrists to incarcerate us, restrain us, drug us and shock us against our will. The United Nations has called for the repeal of these laws and an end to forced treatment, institutionalization and guardianship. The basis for these new human rights standards is the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which says, "the existence of a disability shall in no case justify a deprivation of liberty."

Despite the name, we do not feel disabled, and we feel we should be free to choose our mental health treatment in the same way that we choose medical treatment. We are a group of mental health consumers, lawyers, activists, peer specialists and others who are pursuing the repeal of these forced treatment laws in the U.S. We're also exploring alternative approaches to treatment that let people keep control over their lives and well-being.

This isn't about being crazy, or being scared of some taboo. We'd like your help in asserting our rights, and we'd like to help you do the same. Tell us your stories of forced treatment, and learn how to protect yourself in the future.
